Solutions-Creating Efficiency Through Innovation

Software Development for Mobile Computing Platorms

Industry firms estimate that between 500 million and 600 million wireless handheld devices are sold each year worldwide. As the power of these small, personal computers increase, they are likely to enhance student motivation towards learning tasks by supporting adaptive learning and rich scenario contexts that allow the students to learn in context. It is this contextual experience of knowledge acquisition in an authentic environment that facilitates the learner to create his own constructs that can be applied to new unfamiliar situations. It will also demand access to specific mobile capabilities, such as wireless network connectivity, service providers, operating systems and the content itself.

On the PC, there is a single architecture, one CPU family and two operating systems to worry about. In embedded devices, however, the total number of different hardware/software combinations is huge. This means that supporting a solution in several devices requires a separate integration and support process. ECS is developing a uniform, standardized framework for delivering content across all embedded and mobile devices. This "Unified Framework for Mobile Learning Technologies" will provide the capabilities to generate diagnostic instruction and immediate feedback across multiple mobile devices. It will support courseware development both at the subject matter level and at the pedagogical level, allowing the author to create and update the course material once across the many delivery platforms available.

The potential of mobile handheld devices presents exciting opportunities as well as massive challenges. The convenience and flexibility of mobile services anytime and anyplace is matched by the complexities associated with development for these platforms. ECS is aware of the many important issues regarding software development for these platforms, such as media transmission rates, memory resources, user interfaces, power requirements, processing core architectures, and development environments. With the abundance of handheld devices available, and the differences between them, ECS tailors our software to accommodate the specific devices that will access those applications. The most effective applications are those that marry user's demands with the technological options available on a particular device.
